How Online Courses Function in 5 Easy Steps

Once you've chosen the school you are interested in, you will be only a semester start away from being involved in as few or as many online courses as you can comfortably handle. Your school will send you all of the information you need for the process, but it can still seem a little confusing at first, or perhaps you are intimidated by the very thought of taking classes online and are hesitant to sign up in the first place. The entire management of an online education can be broken down into five simple steps from start to finish:

  1. Choose your degree program - Though it is not absolutely required that you know exactly where you want to go or what degree program you want to enter before you start taking courses online, it certainly helps. If you are uncertain, you can always enter school as an undeclared or exploratory major. If you do know what degree you want from the school you have chosen, your counselor will provide you with information on the classes that are requires to graduate with that degree and a list of recommended courses as well. There may be prerequisites for some of the classes in your degree program - courses that you cannot enroll in until you have completed other classes first - but generally you can sign up for as many or as few classes in your degree track as you wish.
  2. Choose your courses - Once you know what you want to do as far as your degree is concerned, you will have to review and select courses, usually from an online catalog at the school's website. You will probably register for classes directly online and advanced computer technology and databases will skillfully keep you from making a degree track mistake such as signing up for classes you are not eligible or qualified for.
  3. Sign into your classes - Usually a few days before your classes begin you will receive an e-mail with information for how to access your classes through your school's online system. This will probably include a temporary password and a username as well as the website address that you should use for logging in. Once you have successfully logged in, you will be able to navigate to various areas pertaining to the classes that you have signed up for.
  4. Receive & review your syllabus - Your instructors will e-mail you or contact you and tell you how to access an online syllabus of information about the online courses that you have signed up for. The syllabus is a detailed outline of how the class will run for the semester. It usually includes information about the grading system that the professor will use and what assignments will be due and when, and how much each will be worth toward your final grade.
  5. Complete and turn in assignments - With your class syllabus in hand, you will be ready to start reading your textbooks and completing and turning in assignments by the due date specified by the instructor. All of your tests will be online and "open book", of course, since you will not be reporting to an actual classroom to take them. When you have finished with the semester, the instructor will post your grades to the online system, enabling you to keep track of your GPA and overall progress.
Online education is a fast growing industry in the United States. Pursuing a higher education through online study is an easy and self-directed way to improve self and/or career.
